Storage Enclosures
Storage enclosures are specially designed chasses for holding and powering storage devices such as hard drives. Disk enclosures also provide power to the drives they contain as well as converting transmitted data into a format recognisable by the computer the enclosure is connected to.
External disk enclosures provide a number of benefits. They provide additional storage capacity to small form factor computers, laptops and servers whose chassis can’t hold any more drives. External RAID arrays consist of a controller, disk drive bays and sometime hard disks and add RAID capabilities to computers lacking RAID controllers. Because they’re removable, enclosures are also often used for NAS, backup or hot swapping applications.
